At the beginning of the New Year it is tradition for some people to set new personal goals and resolutions.

Why not use this time to start Invisalign to straighten out your teeth to increase your confidence or whiten your teeth to help your teeth sparkle! Even if it is just purchasing the new toothbrush you’ve been putting off or start setting a flossing goal to improve your oral health. Oral hygiene is a contributing factor to your overall health and is important to maintain to a high standard.

Here are some handy tips to improve your smile and health!

Invisalign

Straighter teeth and confidence is an obvious reason to get Invisalign but there are many other benefits to take into consideration!

Making your teeth straighter significantly reduces your susceptibility to gum disease as less food and bacteria will accumulate between your teeth. Unlike braces, Invisalign is virtually invisible to others and you can remove it whilst eating.

Invisalign can fix the way you bite, relieving some tension and pain that you may not have realised existed!  If you have been thinking about Invisalign for a while, now is the time to book in for your initial consultation to get the journey started!

Toothbrushes

Stop putting off replacing your old and worn out toothbrush!

If you have sensitivity or receding gums, switch over now to a soft bristled brush. You do not need to brush hard to remove plaque, just brush for 2 minutes, all over your mouth and twice a day. Electric toothbrushes are recommended due to their oscillating action and small head they have the ability to get to hard to reach areas. Bite the bullet and buy a new electronic toothbrush or replace your pre-existing toothbrush if the battery life is diminishing. Toothbrushes and toothbrush heads should be replaced at least every 3 months or once visible signs of wear are present. If you are conscious about waste, come into our reception and purchase an eco-friendly brush made from cornstarch!

Dental Floss and/or piksters?

How many times have you visited the dentist and they’ve given you a lecture on flossing? Countless, right? Flossing is extremely important for your gum health. Gum health is difficult to reverse if you neglect them for too long and won’t grow back. Floss cleans between the teeth and in those hard to reach places that a toothbrush cannot reach. It will save you lots of money in the dental chair in the long run! Floss once a day to maintain your oral health. If floss isn’t your thing, try piksters! Piksters are micro brushes that come in various sizes to fit between your teeth and gums.

Regular dental checks

In Australia, it is recommended to visit a dentist or hygienist once every 6 months for a routine check up and clean to maintain a good level of oral health. Even if you clean your teeth extremely well, it is still recommended to remove stubborn plaque or calculus from areas that aren’t visible to the naked eye. Removing plaque will not only benefit your teeth, but also your gums! Plaque and calculus contain harmful bacteria that will irritate the gums overtime and trigger a response leading to inflammation and sensitivity.

The dentists at Dentist Mandy clean your teeth with 3 steps. They will initially use the ultrasonic tool to use water and vibrations to remove the plaque. Secondly, the dentist will use the airflow which is high pressure salty spray to rid your teeth of tough stains and leave them feeling polished! The final stage is applying fluoride to your teeth to help strengthen your tooth enamel and combat future decay.
